From South Australia:
"Just a quicky to let you know that the crew of THE UTE DeVille pulled off a first place in the OCTYC (Onkaparinga Coast Trailerable Yacht Championship) in a close fought three race series of back to back short course races with a score card of 1st , 2nd & 1st.
The series is run on South Aust C.B.H. Second place was a water ballasted Young 7.8.
How close? That first race was won by 0.01 of a minute (0.6 of a second). First prize was $450-00 cash (pays for a new jib).
Prize money was paid back to 10th place all for an entry fee of $10-00 .Christies Sailing Club is to be congratulated on how it ran the event and for putting it's own money up once again.
The following weekend the same crew secured a second over the line and second on corrected time in the Goolwa to Meningie Classic after a gruelling six hours and forty five odd minutes of almost everything that the Murray River, Lake Alexandrina, the Narrows and Lake Albert could throw at us.
This race is the longest point to point fresh water race in the Southern Hemisphere, over 40 nautical miles. We managed to keep well in touch with the Spider 22 Slippery When Wet all the way upwind through the Lower Murray and Lake Alexandrina but they pulled well ahead of us once we headed off through the narrows and on the spinnaker run in a dying breeze across Lake Albert. Still their efforts, even assisted by the dying breeze only got them a fifth placing on corrected time.
First place on corrected, and third over the line, was a Spring 25 sailed by B.Briggs from Goolwa Sailing Club. Amazingly he was in fifth place coming into Lake Albert and passed a Farr 740 sport and a Farr 7500 down wind in the dying breeze across the Lake (stay tuned for C.B.H. adjustments, the Farr 7500 is owned by Goolwa's handicapper )
Cocktails and Dreams (Brendan's R650) also competed and completed the course and hopfully we will hear of their race story too. Good Sailing, Bryn"TYA
